Zsa Zsa Gabor

Zsa Zsa Gabor

Sari Gabor
1918 -
Hungarian born Budapest

Height 5' 4" (1.63 m) . Undoubtedly, the woman who became to epitomize what we recognize today as "celebrity", Zsa Zsa Gabor is better known for her many marriages, personal appearances, her 'dahlink' catchphrase, her actions, life gossip and quotations on men, rather than her film career. It is unclear as to Zsa Zsa's birthdate; sources vary from 1917 to 1919. Born in Budapest, Hungary, as Sari Gabor, she followed her sister Eva Gabor to Hollywood. A radiant, beautiful blonde, Zsa Zsa began appearing on television shows and doing the odd movie. Her first film was at MGM in Lovely to Look at (1952), co-starring Kathryn Grayson and Red Skelton. She next made a comedy called We're Not Married! (1952) at Twentieth Century Fox, with Ginger Rogers. It was far from a star billing for Zsa Zsa, appearing several names down the cast list as a supporting player. It was 1952, however that saw her break into movies big time with her starring role opposite José Ferrer in Moulin Rouge (1952), although it's been said that she was given a very hard time throughout the filming from director John Huston. In the following years Zsa Zsa slipped back into supporting roles in films such as Lili (1953) and 3 Ring Circus (1954). Her main period of film work was in the 1950s, with other roles in Death of a Scoundrel (1956) with Yvonne De Carlo and The Man Who Wouldn't Talk (1958) with Anna Neagle. Again, these were supporting roles. By the 1960s Zsa Zsa was appearing more as herself in the movies; she now appeared to follow her own persona around, and cameo appearances were the order of the day in films such as Pepe (1960) and Jack of Diamonds (1967). This continued throughout the 1970s throughShe was very memorable as herself in The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear (1991), in which she humorously pokes fun at an incident in 1990 when she was convicted of slapping a police officer during a traffic dispute and spent several days in jail (such infamous incidents contributed to her becoming one of the most all-time recognizable of Hollywood celebrities in recent years and often ridiculed as a result_. She was also memorable to British television viewers on "The Ruby Wax Show" (1997).In 2002 she was reported to be in a coma in a Los Angeles hospital after a horrifying car accident. The 85-year-old Hungarian-born star was injured when the car she was traveling in hit a light pole in West Hollywood, California. Clark Gable

Clark Gable

William Clark Gable
1901 - 1960
American born Cadiz, Ohio

Nickname Gabe, The King, The King of Hollywood . Height 6' 1" (1.85 m) . Clark Gable's mother died when he was seven months old. At 16 he quit high school, went to work in an Akron (Ohio) tire factory and decided to become an actor after seeing the play "The Bird of Paradise". He toured in stock companies, worked oil fields and sold ties. In 1924 he reached Hollywood with the help of Portland, Oregon, theatre manager Josephine Dillon, who coached and later married him (she was 17 years his senior). After playing a few bit parts he returned to the stage, becoming lifelong friends with Lionel Barrymore. After several failed screen tests (for Barrymore and Darryl F. Zanuck), Gable was signed in 1930 by MGM's Irving Thalberg. Joan Crawford asked for him as co-star in Dance, Fools, Dance (1931) and the public loved him manhandling Norma Shearer in A Free Soul (1931) the same year. His unshaven lovemaking with bra-less Jean Harlow in Red Dust (1932) made him MGM's most important star. At one point he refused an assignment and the studio punished him by loaning him out to (at the time) low-rent Columbia Pictures, which put him in Frank Capra's It Happened One Night (1934), which won him an Oscar. He returned to far more substantial roles at MGM, such as Fletcher Christian in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) and Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind (1939). When his third wife Carole Lombard died in a plane crash returning from a War Bond drive, a grief-stricken Gable joined the US Army Air Force and was off the screen for three years, flying combat missions in Europe. When he returned the studio regarded his salary as excessive and did not renew his contract. He freelanced, but his films didn't do well at the box office. He announced during filming of The Misfits (1961) that, for the first time, he was to become a father. Two months later he died of a heart attack. He was laid to rest beside Carole Lombard at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Spouse Kay Williams (11 July 1955 - 16 November 1960) (his death) 1 child, Sylvia Ashley (20 December 1949 - 21 April 1952) (divorced), Carole Lombard (29 March 1939 - 16 January 1942) (her death), Maria "Ria" Franklin Printiss Lucas Langham Gable

Anne Francis

Anne Francis

1932 -
American born Ossining, New York

Height 5' 8" (1.73 m) . Beautiful, curvaceous, mole-lipped Anne Francis got into show business quite early in life. At age 6, she became a John Robert Powers model and swiftly moved into radio soaps in New York. By 11, she was on Broadway with Gertrude Lawrence in "Lady in the Dark". MGM put her under contract after WWII where she appeared in a couple of obscure starlet bits, both musical and dramatic, but nothing came of it. Trekking back to New York, she appeared to good notice during TV's "Golden Age" and was discovered by Darryl F. Zanuck as a juvenile delinquent in the low budget film So Young So Bad (1950), which led to a 20th-Century Fox contract. She soon starred in a number of promising blonde ingenue roles, including Elopement (1951), Lydia Bailey (1952) and Dreamboat (1952), along with co-starring opposite some of Hollywood's finest leading man in some noteworthy 50s classics: Bad Day at Black Rock (1955) opposite Spencer Tracy and Robert Ryan, Blackboard Jungle (1955) starring Glenn Ford and a rising Sidney Poitier, and the sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet (1956) with a dead-serious Leslie Nielsen. But, for the most part, her roles emphasized her fetching looks than her acting ability and she soon refocused, finding a comfortable niche on 60s television. She found a most appreciative audience as an Emma Peel-like detective in the short-lived cult series "Honey West" (1965), where she combined glamour and a sexy veneer with judo throws and karate chops. She returned to films only on occasion after that, the most controversial being Funny Girl (1968), in which her co-starring role as Barbra Streisand's chorine pal was reduced to a glorified cameo and a lawsuit ensued. She also appeared gratuitously opposite top film comics in some of their worst vehicles: Hook, Line & Sinker (1969) starring Jerry Lewis, and The Love God? (1969) with Don Knotts, which did absolutely nothing to further her career. She remained, however, a bright, colorful, decorative, wise-cracking presence in a slew of TV-movies well into the 90s. For such a promising start and with such amazing stamina and longevity, the girl with the sexy mole really deserved better. Spouse Dr. Robert Abeloff (1960 - 1964) (divorced) 2 children, Bamlet Lawrence Price Jr. (May 1952 - 6 April 1955) (divorced).

Jodie Foster

Ariane Munker

American born Bronx, New York

Height 5' 3½" (1.61 m) . Jodie Foster started her career at the age of two. For four years, she made commercials and finally gave her debut as an actress in the TV series "Mayberry R.F.D." (1968), on which her brother, Buddy Foster, was a regular. In 1975, Jodie was offered the role of the prostitute Iris in the movie Taxi Driver (1976). This role, for which she received an Academy Award nomination in the "Best Supporting Actress" category, marked a breakthrough in her career. One tragic moment in her life was March 30th, 1981 when John Hinckley attempted to assassinate the President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. Hinkley was obsessed with Jodie and the movie Taxi Driver (1976), in which Travis Bickle, played by Robert De Niro, tried to shoot presidential candidate, Palantine. Harrison Ford

Harrison Ford

1942 -
American born Chicago

Nickname Harry . Height 6' 1" (1.85 m) . His father was Irish, his mother Russian-Jewish. He was a lackluster student at Maine Township High School East in Park Ridge Illinois (no athletic star, never above a C average). After dropping out of Ripon College in Wisconsin, where he did some acting and later summer stock, he signed a Hollywood contract with Columbia and later Universal. His roles in movies and TV ("Ironside" (1967), "The Virginian" (1962)) remained secondary and, discouraged, he turned to a career in professional carpentry. He came back big four years later, however, as Bob Falfa in American Graffiti (1973). Four years after that he hit colossal with the role of Han Solo in Star Wars (1977). Another four years and Ford was (words fail) Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Still another four years and he received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for his role as John Book in Witness (1985). All he managed four years after that was his third starring success as Indiana Jones; in fact, many of his earlier successful roles led to sequels as did his more recent portrayal of Jack Ryan in Patriot Games (1992). Another Golden Globe nomination came his way for the part of Dr. Richard Kimble in The Fugitive (1993). He is clearly a well- established Hollywood superstar. He also maintains an 800-acre ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Spouse Melissa Mathison (14 March 1983 - 6 January 2004) (divorced) 2 children, Mary Marquardt (18 June 1964 - 1979) (divorced) 2 children.

Joan Fontaine

Joan Fontaine

Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland
1917 -
British born Tokyo, Japan

Height 5' 3" (1.60 m) . Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland (aka Joan Fontaine) was born on October 22, 1917, in Tokyo, Japan, in what was known as the International Settlement. Her father was a British patent attorney with a lucrative practice in Japan, but due to Joan and her older sister's (Olivia de Havilland) recurring ailments the family moved to California in the hopes of improving their health. Mrs. de Havilland and the two girls settled in Saratoga while their father went back to his practice in Japan. Joan's parents did not get along well and a divorce soon followed. Mrs. de Havilland had a desire to be an actress but her dream was curtailed when she married. Now she hoped to pass on her dream to Olivia and Joan. While Olivia pursued a stage career, Joan went back to Tokyo, where she attended the American School. In 1934 she came back to California, where her sister was already making a name for herself on the stage. Joan likewise joined a theater group in San Jose. However, San Jose was not quite an acting mecca, so she went to Los Angeles to try her luck there. After moving to L.A., Joan adopted the name of Joan Burfield because she didn't want to infringe upon Olivia, who was using the family surname. She tested at MGM for a small role in No More Ladies (1935), but she was scarcely noticed. After that production, Joan was idle for a year and a half. During this time she roomed with Olivia, who was having much more success in films. By 1937, this time calling herself Joan Fontaine, she landed a better role as Trudy Olson in You Can't Beat Love (1937). Later that year she took an uncredited part in Quality Street (1937). Although the next two years saw her in better roles, she still yearned for something better. In 1940 she garnered her first Academy Award nomination for Rebecca (1940). Although she thought she should have won, (she lost out to Ginger Rogers in Kitty Foyle: The Natural History of a Woman (1940)), she was now an established member of the Hollywood set. She would again be Oscar-nominated for her role as Lina McLaidlaw Aysgarth in Suspicion (1941), and this time she won. Joan was making one film a year but choosing her roles well. In 1942 she starred in the well-received This Above All (1942). The following year she appeared in The Constant Nymph (1943). Once again she was nominated for the Oscar, losing out to Jennifer Jones in The Song of Bernadette (1943). By now it was safe to say she was more famous than her older sister. More fine films followed. In 1948, though, she was forced to accept second billing to Bing Crosby in The Emperor Waltz (1948). Joan took the year off in 1949 before coming back in 1950 with September Affair (1950) and Born to Be Bad (1950). In 1951 she starred in Paramount's _Darling, How Could You (1951)_ , which turned out badly for her and the studio, as it wasn't the hit they imagined it would be. More weak productions followed. Joan slowed down on the big screen for a while, taking parts in television programs and dinner theaters. She also starred in many well produced Broadway plays such as "Forty Carats" and "The Lion in Winter". Her last appearance on the big screen was The Witches (1966). Her final appearance before the cameras was Good King Wenceslas (1994) (TV). Joan, today, still appears on the stage and lecture circuit while traveling and writing in her spare time. Jane Fonda

Jane Fonda

Lady Jayne Seymour Fonda
1937 -
American born New York City

Nickname Hanoi Jane, Lady Jane (childhood) . Height 5' 8" (1.73 m) . Born in New York City to legendary screen star Henry Fonda and New York socialite Frances Seymour Brokaw, Jane Seymour Fonda was destined early to an uncommon and influential life in the limelight. Although she initially showed little inclination to follow her father's trade, she was prompted by Joshua Logan to appear with her father in the 1954 Omaha Community Theatre production of "The Country Girl". Her interest in acting grew after meeting Lee Strasberg in 1958 and joining the Actors Studio. Her screen debut in Tall Story (1960) (directed by Logan) marked the beginning of a highly successful and respected acting career highlighted by two Academy Awards (for her performances in Klute (1971) and Coming Home (1978)) and five Oscar nominations (for Best Actress in They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969), Julia (1977), The Morning After (1986) and On Golden Pond (1981), which was the only film she made with her father). Her professional success contrasted with her personal life, which was often laden with scandal and controversy. Her appearance in several risqué movies (including Barbarella (1968), directed by her then-husband Roger Vadim) was followed by what was to become her most debated and controversial period: her espousal of anti-establishment causes and especially her anti-war activities during the Vietnam War. Her political involvement continued with fellow activist and husband Tom Hayden in the 1970s and early 1980s. In the 1980s she started the aerobic exercise craze with the publication of the "Jane Fonda's Workout Book". She and Hayden divorced, and she married broadcasting mogul Ted Turner in 1991. Spouse Ted Turner (21 December 1991 - 22 May 2001) (divorced), Tom Hayden (21 January 1973 - 1990) (divorced) 1 child, Roger Vadim (14 August 1965 - 16 January 1973) (divorced) 1 child.

Errol Flynn

Errol Flynn

Errol Leslie Flynn
1909 - 1959
Australian /American born Hobart, Tasmania

Nickname The Baron, Satan's Angel (given to him by Marlene Dietrich) . Height 6' 2½" (1.89 m) . Errol Flynn was born to parents 'Theodore Thomas Flynn', a respected biologist, and Marrelle Young, an adventurous young woman and decendent of a midshipman of HMS Bounty fame. Young Flynn was a rambunctious child who could be counted on to find trouble. When the family took up residence in England, Errol managed to have himself thrown out of every school he was enrolled in. In his late teens he set out to find gold, but instead found a series of short lived odd jobs. Information is sketchy, but the positions of police constable, sanitation engineer, treasure hunter, sheep castrator, shipmaster for hire, fisherman, and soldier seem to be among his more reputable career choices. Staying one jump ahead of the law and jealous husbands forced Flynn back to England. He took up acting, a passtime he had previously stumbled into when asked to play (ironically) Fletcher Christian in a film called In the Wake of the Bounty (1933). Errol Flynn's natural athletic talent and good looks attracted the attention of Warner Brothers and soon he was off to America. Flynn's luck held when he replaced Robert Donat in the title role of Captain Blood (1935). He quickly rocketed to stardom as the undisputed king of swashbuckler films, a title inherited from Douglas Fairbanks, but which remains Flynn's to this day. Onscreen, he was the freedom loving rebel, a man of action who fought against injustice and won the hearts of damsels in the process. His offscreen passions; drinking, fighting, boating and sex, made his film escapades seem pale. His love life brought him considerable fame, three statutory rape trials, and a lasting memorial in the expression "In like Flynn". Serious roles eluded Flynn, and as his lifestyle eroded his youthful good looks, his career declined. Troubles with lawsuits and the IRS plagued him at this time, eroding what little money he had saved. A few good roles did come his way late in life, however, usually aging alchoholics, almost mirror images of Flynn. He was making a name as a serious actor before his death. Spouse Patrice Wymore (23 October 1950 - 14 October 1959) (his death) 1 child, Nora Eddington (August 1943 - 7 July 1948) (divorced) 2 daughters Deirdre, Rory, Lili Damita (5 May 1935 - 8 April 1942) (divorced) 1 child.

Louise Fletcher

Louise Fletcher

1934 -
American born Birmingham, Alabama

Height 5' 9½" (1.77 m) . Born in Birmingham, Alabama to Episcopal minister Robert Fletcher and his wife Estelle, both of whom were deaf, Louise Fletcher was introduced to performing at a young age by the aunt who taught her to speak. After graduating from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, she took a trip out west with her roommates, finding herself in Los Angeles without enough money to return home. She took a temporary job as a receptionist and signed up for acting classes at night. Soon she was working regularly in television and film, but after marrying producer Jerry Bick and having two sons, the actress took a long hiatus to raise her children.Returning to work in 1974 in Robert Altman's Thieves Like Us (1974), Fletcher came to the attention of director Milos Forman, who was casting the difficult role of the nurse in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975). She won the role - and then the Academy Award - portraying deadly, inflexible Nurse Ratched, who has since become a cultural icon. Numerous film roles followed, including co-starring turns with Peter Falk in The Cheap Detective (1978) and with Richard Burton in Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977). Fletcher has appeared in a number of science fiction and horror classics such as Firestarter (1984), Brainstorm (1983), and Flowers in the Attic (1987).Though she earned an Emmy Award nomination for her recurring role on "Picket Fences" (1992), Fletcher is perhaps best known to recent television audiences as Kai Winn from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (1993) and as Nora Bloom from the cult classic "VR.5" (1995). Peter Finch

Peter Finch

William Mitchell
1916 - 1977
British born London

Nickname Finchie . Height 5' 11" (1.80 m) . Despite being one of the finest actors of his generation, Peter Finch will be remembered as much for his reputation as a hard-drinking, hell-raising womaniser as for his performances on the screen. He was born in London in 1916 and went to live in Sydney, Australia at the age of ten. There he worked in a series of dead-end jobs before taking up acting, his film debut being in the mediocre comedy Dad and Dave Come to Town (1938). He made his stage debut as a comedian's stooge in 1939. Laurence Olivier spotted him and persuaded him to return to Britain to perform classic roles on the stage. Finch then had an affair with Olivier's wife, Vivien Leigh. Despite being married three times, Finch also had highly-publicised affairs with actresses Kay Kendall and Mai Zetterling. Finch soon switched to film after suffering appalling stage fright. As a screen actor, he won five BAFTA awards and his talent was beyond doubt. His two finest roles, the only two for which he received Oscar nominations, were as the homosexual Jewish doctor in Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971) and as the 'mad prophet of the air-waves' in Network (1976). He died a couple of months before being awarded the Oscar for 'Network'and remains the only actor to have won the award posthumously. Spouse Eletha Finch (9 November 1973 - 14 January 1977) (his death) 1 child, Yolande Turner (4 July 1959 - 11 November 1965) (divorced) 2 children, Tamara Tchinarova (21 April 1943 - 17 June 1959) (divorced) 1 daughter.

William Claude Dunkenfield
1879 - 1946
American born Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Nickname Bill, Uncle Claudie (self reference) . Height 5' 8" (1.73 m) . William Claude Dukenfield was the eldest of five children born to Cockney immigrant James Dukenfield and Philadelphia native Kate Felton. He went to school for four years, then quit to work with his father selling vegetables from a horse cart. At eleven, after many fights with his alcoholic father (who hit him on the head with a shovel), he ran away from home. For a while he lived in a hole in the ground, depending on stolen food and clothing. He was often beaten and spent nights in jail. His first regular job was delivering ice. By age thirteen he was a skilled pool player and juggler. It was then, at an amusement park in Norristown PA, that he was first hired as an entertainer. There he developed the technique of pretending to lose the things he was juggling. In 1893 he was employed as a juggler at Fortescue's Pier, Atlantic City. When business was slow he pretended to drown in the ocean (management thought his fake rescue would draw customers). By nineteen he was billed as "The Distinguished Comedian" and began opening bank accounts in every city he played. At age twenty-three he opened at the Palace in London and played with Sarah Bernhardt at Buckingham Palace. He starred at the Folies-Bergere (young Charles Chaplin and Maurice Chevalier were on the program). He was in each of the Ziegfeld Follies from 1915 through 1921. He played for a year in the highly praised musical "Poppy" which opened in New York in 1923. In 1925 D.W. Griffith made a movie of the play, renamed Sally of the Sawdust (1925), starring Fields. Pool Sharks (1915), Fields' first movie, was made when he was thirty-six. He settled into a mansion near Burbank, California and made most of his thirty-seven movies for Paramount. He appeared in mostly spontaneous dialogs on Charlie McCarthy's radio shows. In 1939 he switched to Universal where he made films written mainly by and for himself. He died after several serious illnesses, including bouts of pneumonia. Spouse Harriet Hughes (8 August 1900 - 25 December 1946) (his death)
