Sharon Stone

Sharon Vonne Stone
1958 -
American born Meadsville

Height 5' 7½" (1.71 m) . Sharon Stone was born and raised in Meadville, a small town in Pennsylvania. Her strict father was a factory worker and her mother was a homemaker. She was the second of four children. At the age of 15, she studied in Saegertown High School, Pennsylvania and, at that same age, entered Edinboro State University of Pennsylvania, and graduated with a degree in creative writing and fine arts. She was a very smart girl, became a bookworm, and once was told that a suitable job for her (and her brains) was to become a lawyer. However, her first love was still the black-and-white movies, especially those featuring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. So, the 17-year-old Sharon got herself into the Miss Pennsylvania beauty contest and won it. From working part-time as a McDonald's counter girl, she worked her way up to become a successful Ford model, both in TV commercials and print ads. Finally, in 1980, she made her debut in Woody Allen's Stardust Memories (1980) as "pretty girl on train". Her first speaking part, though, was in Wes Craven's horror movie, Deadly Blessing (1981). She struggled through many parts in B-movies, notably in King Solomon's Mines (1985), and Action Jackson (1988). She was also married in 1984 to Michael Greenburg, the producer of "MacGyver" (1985), but they divorced two years later. She finally received her big break with Arnold Schwarzenegger in Total Recall (1990) and also posed nude for Playboy, a daring move for a 32-year-old actress. But it worked; she accepted a breakthrough role as a sociopath novelist, "Catherine Tramell", in Basic Instinct (1992) with Michael Douglas. Her interrogation scene has become a classic in film history and her performance captivated everyone, from MTV viewers, who honored her with Most Desirable Female and Best Female Performance Awards, to a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. After she got famous, she didn't want to be typecast, so she played a victim in Sliver (1993) and, in Intersection (1994), she was the aloof, estranged wife of Richard Gere. These movies didn't "work", so she got herself again into more aggressive roles, such as The Specialist (1994) with Sylvester Stallone and The Quick and the Dead (1995) with Gene Hackman. But, it wasn't until she played a beautiful but drug-crazy wife of Robert De Niro in Casino (1995) that she got far more than just fame and fortune--she also received the acknowledgment of the movie industry for her acting ability. She received her first Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination. She did a couple of films after wards, teaming up with Isabelle Adjani in Diabolique (1996), and as a woman waiting for her death penalty in Last Dance (1996). In 1998, she married a newspaper editor, Phil Bronstein. She also received her third Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress that year for The Mighty (1998), a film that her company, "Chaos", also co-executive produced. The next year, she entered her first comedic role in The Muse (1999), which starred and was directed by Albert Brooks and gave her another Golden Globe nomination. Sharon Stone, a diva who thoroughly enjoys her hard-won stardom, is now a mother of an adorable baby boy, Roan Joseph. Spouse Phil Bronstein (14 February 1998 - 29 January 2004) (divorced) 1 child, Michael Greenburg (18 August 1984 - 20 January 1987) (divorced), George Englund Jr. (? - ?) (divorced).

Dean Stockwell

Dean Stockwell

Robert Dean Stockwell
1936 -
American born Hollywood

Height 5' 6" (1.68 m) . Photogenic American child actor of the 1940s, popular due in no small measure to his air of innocence and his beautiful, cherubic face with its dimples and his sparkling eyes, topped with a crown of curls. Still an actor in demand while well into his middle years, he is one of the few juvenile performers to succeed lifelong in films. Considering child actors who matured gracefully, his career can be likened perhaps only to that of Natalie Wood, excepting her degree of stardom. Spouse Joy Marchenko (15 December 1981 - 2004) (divorced) 2 children, Millie Perkins (15 April 1960 - 30 July 1962) (divorced).

Rod Steiger

Rod Steiger

Rodney Stephen Steiger
1925 -2002 (pneumonia and kidney failure)
American born Westhampton

Height 5' 10" (1.78 m) . Rod Steiger received his first film roles in the early 1950s. His first major one was in Teresa (1951), but his first lead role was in the TV version of Marty (1953) (TV). The movie version, however, had Ernest Borgnine in the lead and won him an Academy Award. Steiger's breakthrough role came in 1954, with the classic On the Waterfront (1954). Since then he has been a presence on the screen as everything from a popular leading man to a little-known character actor. Steiger made a name for himself in many different types of roles, from a boxer in The Harder They Fall (1956) to the title character in Al Capone (1959). He was one of dozens of stars in the epic World War II film The Longest Day (1962). In 1964 he received his second Oscar nomination for The Pawnbroker (1964). The next couple of years he was at the height of his powers. In 1965 he starred in the dark comedy The Loved One (1965), and in David Lean's epic Doctor Zhivago (1965). In 1966 he starred in the _"Play of the Month" (1965) episode "Death of a Salesman" as "Willy Loman" in the TV version of his stage play "Death of a Salesman", but in 1967 he landed what many consider his greatest role: "Sheriff Bill Gillespie" in In the Heat of the Night (1967), opposite Sidney Poitier. Steiger deservedly took home the Best Actor Oscar for his work in that film.He took another controversial role as a man with many tattoos in The Illustrated Man (1969) and as a serial killer in the classic No Way to Treat a Lady (1968). After that he seemed to have withdrawn from high-profile movies and became more selective in the roles he chose. He turned down the lead in Patton (1970) and also in The Godfather (1972). Among his more notable roles in the 1970s are Happy Birthday, Wanda June (1971), Lolly-Madonna XXX (1973), as Benito Mussolini in Mussolini: Ultimo atto (1974), Portrait of a Hitman (1977), "Jesus of Nazareth" (1977) (mini), F.I.S.T (1978) and The Amityville Horror (1979). He starred in the critically acclaimed The Chosen (1981) with Robby Benson and Maximilian Schell, perhaps the highlight of his 1980s movie career. Steiger increasingly moved away from the big Hollywood pictures, instead taking roles in foreign productions and independent movies. As the 1980s ended, Steiger landed a role as the buttoned-up New York City Chief of Police in January Man (1989).Steiger was seriously affected by depression for 8 years. As he returned to the screen in the late 1990s he began creating some of his most memorable roles. He was the doctor in the independently-made movie Shiloh (1996), about an abused dog. He was the crazed, kill-'em-all army general in Mars Attacks! (1996) who always called his enemies peace-mongers. He took a small part as a Supreme Court judge in The Hurricane (1999) and as a preacher in the badly produced film End of Days (1999). He was still active in films moving into the new millennium. Spouse Joan Benedict (10 October 2000 - 9 July 2002) (his death), Paula Ellis (1986 - 1997) (divorced) 1 child, Sherry Nelson (April 1973 - 1979) (divorced), Claire Bloom (20 September 1959 - 1969) (divorced) 1 child, Sally Gracie (1952 - 1958) (divorced).

Barbara Stanwyck

Barbara Stanwyck

Ruby Catherine Stevens
1907 - 1990 (congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive lung disease, emphysema)
American born Brooklyn

Nickname Missy, The Queen . Height 5' 5" (1.65 m) . Most of America's audiences see Barbara Stanwyck as the matriarch of the family known as the Barkley's on TV western "The Big Valley" (1965), where she played Victoria. Later she starred on the hit drama "The Colbys" (1985). But for millions of other fans, she had a movie career that spanned from 1927 until 1964 and then was on television until 1986. It was a film career that lasted for 59 years. She was born, Ruby Stevens, on July 16, 1907, in Brooklyn, New York. She went to work at the local telephone company for $14 dollars a week, but she had the urge to somehow enter show business. Dreams, that was all it was. When not working, she pounded the pavement in search of dancing jobs. The persistence paid off. Barbara was hired as a chorus girl for the princely sum of $40 a week. This was so much better than the wages she was getting from the phone company. She was 17, and she was going to make the most out of the opportunity that had been given her.In 1928, Barbara moved to Hollywood where she was to start out one of the most lucrative careers filmdom had ever seen. She was an extremely versatile actress, who could adapt to any role. Barbara was equally at home in diverse genres such as the melodrama Forbidden (1932) and Stella Dallas (1937), along with one of her best films, Double Indemnity (1944). The latter starred Fred MacMurray as you have never seen him before. She excelled in comedies such as Remember the Night (1940) and The Lady Eve (1941). One of her first westerns was Union Pacific (1939), and finally her most memorable role, in TV's "The Big Valley" (1965). In 1983, she played in the ABC hit mini-series "The Thorn Birds" (1983) (mini), which did much to keep her in the eye of the public. She turned out an outstanding performance as Mary Carson.Barbara was nominated for four Academy Awards, though she never won. The roles she was nominated for were all roles in which Barbara turned in magnificent performances, but the "powers that be" always awarded the Oscar to someone else. She was considered a gem to work with, for her serious but easygoing attitude on the set. She worked hard at being an actress, and she never allowed her star quality to go to her head. However, in 1982, Barbara was awarded an honorary Academy Award for "superlative creativity and unique contribution to the art of screen acting." Sadly, Barbara died on January 20, 1990, leaving 93 movies and a host of TV appearances as her legacy to us. Spouse Robert Taylor (13 May 1939 - 21 February 1951) (divorced), Frank Fay (26 August 1928 - 30 December 1935) (divorced) 1 child.

Harry Dean Stanton

Harry Dean Stanton

1926 -
American born Kentucky

Height 5' 8" (1.73 m) . Prolific character actor with a drooping, weather-beaten appearance and superb acting talent that have been his ticket to appearing in over 100 films, and 50 TV episodes. Born in West Irvine, Kentucky, Stanton served in WW II, then returned to the University of Kentucky to appear in a production of "Pygmalion", before heading out to California and honing his craft at the prestigious Pasadena Playhouse. Stanton then toured around the US with a male choir, worked in children's theater, and then headed back to California. His first role onscreen was in the tepid Tomahawk Trail (1957), but he was quickly noticed and appeared regularly in minor roles as cowboys and soldiers through the late 1950s and early 1960s. His star continued to rise and he received better roles in which he could showcase his laid-back style, such as in Cool Hand Luke (1967), Kelly's Heroes (1970), Dillinger (1973), The Godfather: Part II (1974), and in Alien (1979). It was around this time that Stanton came to the attention of director Wim Wenders, who cast him in his finest role yet as Travis in the moving Paris, Texas (1984). Next indie director Alex Cox gave Stanton a role that really brought him to the forefront, in the quirky cult film Repo Man (1984).Stanton was now heavily in demand, and his unique look got him cast as everything from a suburban father in the mainstream Pretty in Pink (1986) to a soft-hearted, but ill-fated, private investigator in Wild at Heart (1990) and a crazy yet cunning scientist in Escape from New York (1981). Apart from his film performances, Stanton is also an accomplished musician, and "The Harry Dean Stanton Band" and their unique spin on mariachi music have been playing together for well over a decade. They have toured internationally to rave reviews. Stanton became a cult figure of cinema and music and when Deborah Harry sang the lyric "I want to dance with Harry Dean..." in her 1990s hit "I Want That Man", she was talking about him.As he moved into the time in his life when most other people would be calling it a day, Harry Dean Stanton has remained consistently active onscreen, most recently appearing in films including Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), The Green Mile (1999) and The Man Who Cried (2000). A true gem amongst character actors, and with an onscreen presence capable of adding that something extra to any production.

A few minor but colourful roles, topped by his performance as the drag artist, Bernadette, in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994), have put Stamp back in the British conscious. Sissy Spacek

Sissy Spacek

Mary Elizabeth Spacek
1949 -
American born Quitman

Height 5' 2" (1.57 m) . As a kid, Sissy Spacek climbed trees, rode horses, swam and played in the woods (other than that, she gave no indication of one day becoming an Oscar-winning actress). She was born Mary Elizabeth Spacek on December 25, 1949, in Quitman, Texas. She attended Quitman High School and was homecoming queen (therefore popular, unlike her character in Carrie (1976)). After graduating, Sissy decided on an acting career, having gotten interested in the profession through her cousin, Rip Torn. She relocated to New York, and through him, enrolled in the New York branch of the Actors Studio. She studied acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, and also tried modeling and singing, appearing in West Village showcases such as the Bitter End for $10 a night. The petite (5'2") Sissy finally broke into films, one of her first being Badlands (1973), art direction by Jack Fisk, with whom she would make eight films and marry in 1974. Her breakout role was in another film she worked on with Fisk, Carrie (1976), in which she played the humiliated prom queen who goes postal with her telekinesis. Sissy had a long career in TV and movies, winning the Oscar for Best Actress for Coal Miner's Daughter (1980); she seems to take it all in stride. Sissy and Jack and their two daughters, Schuyler Fisk and Madison Fisk, live on a large horse ranch in the foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. For the last several years the most important thing for Sissy has just been creating a stable home life for her family. And when Sissy isn't working on a movie, she can be seen tooling around town in a pickup, being a mountain mom. Spouse Jack Fisk (12 April 1974 - present) 2 children.

At 24 years of age, young Soul joined a North Dakota musical revue, was noticed by a keen eyed talent scout, and then signed to a studio contract. He then went on to study acting with the Irene Daly School of The Actors Company, and with the Columbia Workshop in Hollywood. Soul then first appeared on TV in small roles in shows including "I Dream of Jeannie" (1965), "Flipper" (1964) and "All in the Family" (1971). Regular TV work kept coming in for Soul including making masked appearances on "The Merv Griffin Show" (1962), as the popular singer known only as "The Covered Man"!!In 1973, Soul had the fortune to be cast as one of the corrupt motorcycle cops in the Clint Eastwood thriller Magnum Force (1973), where his talents came to the attention of several TV execs who were looking for someone to play one of the lead roles in the upcoming "Starsky and Hutch" (1975) TV series. After four seasons, the show came to an end, yet Soul's talents were still in demand. He quickly went on to appear as the meek writer turned terrified vampire hunter, "Ben Mears", in the chilling telemovie Salem's Lot (1979) (TV), and then as "Jake" in the interesting telemovie Homeward Bound (1980) (TV).Several undemanding telemovies, and TV series appearances followed for Soul, however in 1988 he scored rave reviews for his portrayal of real life, cold blooded cop killer "Michael Lee Platt" in the telemovie _In the Line Of Duty: The F.B.I. Murders (1988)_ . The telemovie was also considered highly controversial for its intense level of violence in a made for TV production!David Soul has continued to remain very busy throughout the 199's and beyond, in both film and on stage productions. He has toured internationally in several theater productions, including playing the Narrator in the critically acclaimed production of Willy Russell's Blood Brothers, plus Soul completed a successful UK tour performing in a production of Ira Levin's Deathtrap. Fans of the original TV series were glad to see Soul back with Paul Michael Glaser doing a cameo appearance in the big budget remake of Starsky & Hutch (2004). Throughout his life, Soul has continually championed social causes often utilizing his own funds to raise awareness on issues including the impact of the Vietnam War, the shutdowns in the US steel industry, plus speaking on animal welfare, world hunger and HIV education. Soul has now for several years made his home in the United Kingdom, where he has appeared at the Edinburgh Festival, and on several British TV shows......and US born Soul has even become a keen soccer fan supporting English club, Arsenal FC! Sir C Aubrey Smith

Sir C Aubrey Smith

Charles Aubrey Smith
1863 - 1948 (pneumonia)
British born London

Height 6' 2" (1.88 m) . Movie roles are sometimes based upon what the audience expects to see. If the role called for the tall stereotypical Englishmen with the stiff upper lip and stern determination, that man would be C. Aubrey Smith, graduate of Cambridge University,a leading freemason and a test cricketer for England. Smith was 30 by the time he embarked upon a career on the stage. It took another 20 plus years before he entered the flickering images of the movies. By 1915, Smith was over 50 in a medium that demanded young actors and starlets. For the next ten years, he appeared in a rather small number of silent movies, and after that, he faded from the scene. It was in 1930, with the advent of sound, that Smith found his position in the movies and that position would be distinguished roles. He played military officers, successful business men, ministers of the cloth and ministers of government. With the bushy eyebrows and stoic face, he played men who know about honour, tradition, and the correct path. He worked with big stars such as Greta Garbo,Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Shirley Temple. As for honours, Smith received the Order of the British Empire in 1938 and was knighted in 1944. He continued to work up to the time of his death. Spouse Honor (? - 20 December 1948) (his death) 1 child.

Marc Singer

Marc Singer

1948 -
Canadian born Vancouver

Height 6' 2" (1.88 m) . A production of the William Shakespeare's "Richard III" with Sir Laurence Olivier that Marc's dad took him to see as a boy made a lasting impression, though he didn't start acting himself until a teacher recruited him to fill a suddenly vacant role in his junior year of high school. However, as the son of musicians, Marc acknowledges, "Performing is in our blood." Of the four Singer children, oldest brother Claude is the only non-performer. The three boys were hell raisers, but Marc says sister Lori Singer held her own. "She's an amazing girl and we're very close," he adds. Marc, who has fond memories of his childhood, was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, lived briefly in New York and grew up in Corpus Christi, TX, and in Oregon before going to college in the Midwest and Washington state. "I've got a lot from each city which I've lived in," he observes. In Seattle, he met his future wife, Hawaiian-born actress Haunani Minn. They live a California casual lifestyle, and Marc enjoys running, sailing, martial arts, boxing, skiing, and motorcycling in his spare time, as well as playing some Western classical piano every day. Spouse Haunani Minn (? - present).

Donald Sinden

Donald Sinden

Donald Alfred Sinden
1923 -
British born Plymounth

Height 6' 2" (1.88 m) . The son of a country chemist, the British actor Donald Sinden intended to pursue a career in architecture but was spotted in an amateur theatrical production and asked to join a company that entertained the troops during World War II (Sinden was rejected for naval service because of asthma). Following a brief training at drama school, he established himself in theater, particularly as a Shakespearean actor. Having made his film debut in The Cruel Sea (1953) , Sinden became a leading man in British films during the 1950s and then moved onto character roles later in his career. While his film appearances became less frequent, he worked steadily in theater (with the Royal Shakespeare Company, primarily) and in television, notably as the unperturbable butler in "Two's Company" (1975) and as a miserable in-law in "Never the Twain" (1981) . Spouse Diana Sinden (3 May 1948 - 15 September 2004) (her death) 2 children.

Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra

Francis Albert Sinatra
1915 -1998 (heart & kidney disease; bladder cancer)
American born Hoboken

Nickname The Voice, Chairman of the Board (of Show Business), Ol' Blue Eyes, Swoonatra, The Sultan of Swoon, La Voz . Height 5' 7" (1.70 m). Growing up on the streets of Hoboken, New Jersey, made Frank Sinatra determined to work hard to get ahead. Starting out as a saloon singer in musty little dives (he carried his own P.A. system), he eventually got work as a band singer, first with The Hoboken Four then with Harry James, then Tommy Dorsey. With the help of George Evans (Sinatra's genius press agent), his image was shaped into that of a street thug and punk who was saved by his first wife, Nancy. In 1942 he started his solo career, instantly finding fame as the king of the bobbysoxers - the young women and girls who were his fans. About that time his film career was also starting in earnest. Known as "One-Take Charlie" for his approach to acting that strove for spontaneity and energy, rather than perfection, he was an instinctive actor who was best at playing parts that mirrored his own personality. A controversial public affair with screen siren Ava Gardner broke up his marriage to Nancy Barbato. After a vocal cord hemorrhage all but ended his career, he fought back and won the coveted role of Maggio in From Here to Eternity (1953). He won an Oscar for best supporting actor, yet still didn't have widespread acceptance in Hollywood. He continued to give strong and memorable performances in such films as The Man with the Golden Arm (1955), Suddenly (1954) and, especially, The Manchurian Candidate (1962) - probably his best film. For the rest of the 1960s he concentrated mainly on lighter roles, playing hard-boiled private eyes and hamming it up with his Rat Pack buddies Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.. Of these films, The Detective (1968) and Ocean's Eleven (1960) are the best. His last lead role was as the aging detective in The First Deadly Sin (1980). He gave a moving performance that was a fitting finale to a long and rich career. Spouse Barbara Marx (11 July 1976 - 14 May 1998) (his death), Mia Farrow (19 July 1966 - August 1968) (divorced), Ava Gardner (7 November 1951 - 5 July 1957) (divorced), Nancy Barbato (4 February 1939 - 29 October 1951) (divorced) 3 children.

Jean Simmons

Jean Merilyn Simmons
1929 -
British born London

Jean Simmons, the demure British beauty was born January 31, 1929, in Crouch End, London. A 14 year old dance student plucked from her school to play Margaret Lockwood's precocious sister in Give Us the Moon (1944), Simmons went on to make a name for herself in such major British productions as Caesar and Cleopatra (1946), Great Expectations (also 1946, as the spoiled, selfish Estella), Black Narcissus (also 1946, as a sultry native beauty), Hamlet (1948, playing Ophelia to Laurence Olivier's great Dane and earning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination), The Blue Lagoon (1949), and So Long at the Fair (1950), among others. In 1950, Jean married actor Stewart Granger and that same year starred in the Sinatra musical "Guys and Dolls" (1955); Jean used her own singing voice and earned her first Golden Globe Award. Simmons divorced Granger in 1960, and almost immediately married writer-director Richard Brooks, who cast her as Sister Sharon opposite Burt Lancaster in Elmer Gantry (1960), a memorable adaptation of the Sinclair Lewis novel. That same year she costarred with Kirk Douglas in Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus and played a would-be home-wrecker opposite Cary Grant in The Grass Is Greener.Off the screen for a few years, she captivated moviegoers with a brilliant performance as the mother in All the Way Home (1963), a literate, tasteful adaptation of James Agee's "A Death in the Family." After that, however, she found quality projects somewhat harder to come by. Life at the Top (1965), Mister Buddwing (1966), Divorce American Style, Rough Night in Jericho (both 1967), The Happy Ending (1969, a Richard Brooks film for which she was again Oscar-nominated, this time as Best Actress)Jean continued making films well into the 1970s. In the 1980s she mainly appeared in TV mini-series, such as "North and South" and "The Thorn Birds." Jean made a comeback to films in 1995 in "How to Make an American Quilt" co-starring Winona Ryder and Anne Bancroft and most recently played the elderly Sophie in the English version of Hayao Miyazaki's Howls Moving Castle. She now resides in Santa Monica, California with her dog Mr. Gates and her 2 cats Adisson and Megan.Spouse

Simone Signoret

Simone Signoret

Henriette Charlotte Simone Kaminker
1921 - 1985 (pancreatic cancer)
French born Wiesbaden

Height 5' 6" (1.68 m) . The face of Simone Signoret on the Paris Metro movie posters in March 1982 looked even older than her 61 years. She was still a box office draw, but the film, Étoile du Nord, L' (1982), would be her last theatrical release. She played the landlady. Signoret had a long film apprenticeship during World War II, mostly as an extra and occasionally getting to speak a single line. She was working without an official permit during the Nazi occupation of France, because her father, who had fled to England, was Jewish. Working almost all the time, she made enough as an extra to support her mother and three younger brothers. Her breakthrough to international stardom came at the age of 38 with the British film Room at the Top (1959). Her Alice Aisgill, an unhappily married woman who hopes she has found true love, radiated real warmth in all of her scenes, not just those in bed. She was the same woman as Dedee, a prostitute who finds true love in Dédée d'Anvers (1948), a film directed by Signoret's first husband, Yves Allégret, a decade earlier. Hollywood beckoned throughout the 1950s, but both Signoret and her second husband, Yves Montand, were refused visas to enter the United States; their progressive political activities did not sit well with the ultra-conservative McCarthy-era mentality that gripped the US at the time. They got visas in 1960 so Montand, as a singer, could perform in New York and San Francisco. They were in Los Angeles in March 1960 when Signoret received the Oscar for best actress and stayed on so Montand could play opposite Marilyn Monroe in Let's Make Love (1960). The Signoret film that is shown most often on TV and that got a theatrical re-release in 1995, four decades after it was made is the French thriller Diaboliques, Les (1955). The chilly character Signoret plays is proof of her acting ability.
